Opposites attract…fans. Ariana Grande’s sweet and well-meaning Cat Valentine couldn’t be any more different from Jennette McCurdy’s trouble-making Sam Puckett, but in Hollywood, that’s a formula for quick friendship. Sam & Cat quickly become friends, roommates, and business partners after meeting in L.A., and develop a talent for landing in (and getting out of) sticky situations.
Sam & Cat only shared one season together on the little screen, but their lives and babysitting snafus came to life on the always vibrant and beautiful sets created by Art Director Harry Matheu and his team. The decadent sets were no doubt filled with treasures you may not have noticed during the run of the show. Here’s 3 of our favorites:
Cat’s Side of the Bedroom
Sam and Cat keep their bedroom split in half. Cat’s side of the bedroom has a lot of um…pink. What Cat lacks in brains, she makes up for in heart. Her bedroom wall shows the audience what she loves: bunnies, cats, and Erwin Sikowitz. As a recurring character in Sam & Cat, as well as a former recurring character in Victorious, Sikowitz is a fan-favorite who appeals to other odd men out.
Nona’s Living Room
Other than their bedroom, this living room was the focal point for Sam & Cat’s activities but not for eating any real food! The drinks you see cast members pulling out to chug in certain scenes were most likely put in there before the shoot, fake, or extremely lukewarm.
This fridge appears to be a prop modeled after a 1950s Kelvinator or similar model. But the unique fridge’s placement in the kitchen created an ultra eccentric atmosphere that fit perfectly with the roommates’ tastes.
In the episode #PeezyB (starring Kel Mitchell as the arrogant rapper Peezy B) Cat heads to Peezy B’s studio to audition for one of his music videos, but ends up being quickly rebuffed and humiliated.
If you ran out crying like Cat did, you probably missed the cool little robots pictured below. If Pufftone Studios was still around, it’d no doubt be a Pokemon Go gym.
What great sets do is immerse us into the world of the shows we love. Through the brilliance of Matheu’s art direction, so many Schneider’s Bakery shows have been brought to life, including and beyond Sam & Cat. The creativity and intricacy put into each room, prop, and piece of furniture adds another layer to the characters themselves.
If you want to hear Sam & Cat tell you about the sets, here are two great behind-the-scene videos — one of which mentions the fake fridge food as exposed by Jennette McCurdy.
