What is Reggae Potato Christmas? We’re so glad you asked.
For those tired of “ugly sweater” parties and boring holiday specials, it’s the answer to all of your party-theme woes. Why not take the monotony out of holiday parties and celebrate Christmas with a big ol’ reggae potato? Sure, it may seem weird, but it’s not completely without precedent, since that’s exactly what happened on last year’s holiday episode of Dan Schneider’s “Game Shakers.”
On this episode, superstar rapper Double G wins the job of hosting an annual TV Christmas special. It’s a Christmas special unlike any Christmas special you have or ever will see again—and not only because of the aforementioned potato nonsense.
When game-developing prodigies Babe (Cree Cicchino), Kenzie (Madisyn Shipman), and Hudson (Thomas Kuc) find out that Double G (Kel Mitchell) is doing a Christmas special, they aren’t exactly thrilled. Double G owes them a song for one of their games, a fact they decide to confront him about it at rehearsal.
Surprisingly, the whole gang gets invited to perform on the Christmas special instead. Double G isn’t having it at first, but he eventually agrees when the crew promises him bigger ratings. Oh, and Double G is in a gigantic potato costume during this whole scene‒‒it’s fantastic.
At the start of the Christmas special, the whole crew seems a bit nervous. What they don’t know is there’s about to be pandemonium on the set. They take their positions, the cameras roll, and Double G slowly steps down the stairs singing “Jingle Bells” with a number of small fireworks behind him. At the end of the stairs, his head catches fire.
Once he realizes that, well, his head is on fire, Double G starts running around the set frantically. The show manager decides to continue the festivities with the Game Shakers instead. Hudson becomes Reggae Potato as Double G continues to deliriously run around backstage. After a while his crew finally remembers what puts out fire (hint: water), and proceeds to dunk his head in the nearest bucket.
Double G rallies to make his way out for the last part of the show, the titular musical number “Reggae Potato.” And what do you know? His head catches fire again. We guess that’s just a testament to his fiery-brilliant mind! Check out the video above to experience this scene in full. We promise you’ll have the song stuck in your head for the rest of the year.
So there you have it. And remember, when celebrating Reggae Potato Christmas on your own time, please do not try any pyrotechnics without a Hollywood stunt team on deck!
